SALEM ON THE CAX!

Founded in 1984, the Salem Lakes Preservation Association oversees environmental conservation efforts and activities affecting the greater Salem Lakes area. The organization directs the monitor/greeter program at the boat access. The foremost objective, of necessity, is the prevention and/or containment of Eurasian Water Milfoil and other aquatic nuisances because of the ever increasing number of lake invasions in Vermont according to the Agency of Natural Resources. The Invasive Species Prevention Program is paid for in part with support from members of our community, Derby voters and the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.

The Salem Lakes Preservation Association would like to announce that it just completed its 21st year providing boat inspections and boater education to folks using the Dave Wood state boat access on Hayward Road in Derby. Six boat access Greeters inspected 602 boats and trailers this year, decontaminating 39. Most of the 39 had the invasive plant, Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) or other plant material on them when retrieved. Only two occurred on boats most previously launched at another lake or pond. As a friendly reminder, it is illegal to travel with plant material attached to your boat, trailer, anchor, anchor line and fishing equipment.

Funding: $9,494 ANC grant from DEC (VT Department of Environmental Conservation), a generous contribution by the town of Derby - $15,000 and many contributions from Derby area residents and Salem Lakes Preservation Association supporters.
If anyone is interested in doing this enjoyable and rewarding work for pay or as a volunteer in 2024, please contact Ed Wells by email at ejoewells@gmavt.net , tel 802.578.3037, or reach out to any lake association director.
